Shawn grew up in a small rural
area of Southern California called Modjeska Canyon. Although it's only
a couple hours south of Los Angeles, "when you're a kid without a
car it may as well have been a 1000 miles from anywhere." Shawn says
life in the canyon was pretty much riding horses, playing music or getting
into trouble. He excelled at all three, but music really grabbed his attention. "I
knew early on that all I wanted to do with my life was make great music."
At 19 he moved to Los Angeles and began playing in various bands. Some of
his early bands got some local notice, but everything changed when Davis
quit being a back-up singer/guitar player and decided to step up front and
sing his songs. "It was a pretty scary moment of choice to leave the
comforts of being one of the guys in the band to being the guy." But
people started to take notice and it wasn't long before Shawn was being
managed by Bret Bair (Hoobastank, Papa Roach) and playing to packed clubs
around L.A.
In the midst of all that excitement, Shawn made what he calls the most important
choice of his career. "I felt like my songwriting needed to take a
gigantic leap forward if I was ever going to have an honest shot at this
business." So he left Bret Bair, Los Angeles and headed east for Nashville. "I
spent a couple years down there writing with some of the best writers on
the planet and getting my butt kicked on a daily basis. Guys like Kostas,
Anthony Smith, Allen Miller and so many others that truly changed my life
as a songwriter and as a man."
Shawn loved his experience of living and writing in Nashville but felt that
it was time to return to Los Angeles and put together what he considered
to be his dream band. "My thinking was if I could get this guy and
that guy and somehow have it all work...wow!!! That would be something..." What
happened is Stonehoney.
